Bringing a newborn into the world is a beautiful, life-changing experience. But let’s be honest—life with a baby (and possibly other little ones!) can sometimes feel like chaos. As a newborn photographer in Louisville, KY, I’ve worked with countless families who worry about how their baby or older kids will behave during a session. The good news? A little preparation and the right approach can turn what seems like chaos into calm, creating stunning photos you’ll treasure forever.
In this blog, I’m sharing my top tips to help you feel confident and prepared for your family’s newborn photography session.
1. Timing Is Everything
Newborn sessions are most successful when done within the first 7-14 days after birth. During this time, babies are typically sleepier and more comfortable being posed. I recommend scheduling your session as soon as you know your due date to secure the ideal timeframe.
When an expecting mother books with me, we “pencil-in” a date 2 weeks after their expected due date. My moms then reach out to me once baby is actually born, and we will confirm their date from there and adjust if needed, depending on babies arrival and how mom is feeling.
2. Keep Baby Comfortable
A cozy baby is a happy baby! I make sure the studio (or your home, if we’re doing an in-home session) is warm and soothing to keep your little one at ease. You can also help by feeding your baby just before the session. A full tummy usually means a calm baby.
A little secret I use to help babies stay happy is heating my swaddle wraps & bean bag blankets with a towel warmer in the studio before you arrive for your session! Most parents choose for me to swaddle their newborn for almost the entire session, and this keeps baby warm and satisfied 9 times out of 10.
3. Don’t Stress About Sibling Participation
Older siblings can sometimes feel restless or overwhelmed during a newborn session, and that’s completely normal. My approach ensures that they feel included and engaged, but I never force participation. Let them warm up, and we’ll capture their bond with the baby naturally.
I typically start with the new baby alone on the beanbag while older siblings warm up to the new environment of the studio. I tell a lot of my parents that I let toddlers run the show! In a situation like this when you need everyone to stay in a good mood, I make it a point to stay extra flexible with everyone involved. I encourage play and natural connection!
4. Trust Your Photographer’s Expertise
As a newborn photographer in Louisville, KY, I specialize in handling all the little details—posing, lighting, and soothing techniques—so you can relax and enjoy the experience. Even if things feel hectic, I promise we’ll capture moments of beauty and connection.
I have been photographing families and babies for over 7 years now, and am a mom myself. I know plenty of tricks to ensure a smooth session as well as how to divert and move on if something doesn’t go to plan.
5. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
Your baby might fuss. Your toddler might not want to sit still. And that’s okay! Some of the sweetest moments come from the in-between moments of real connection. Let go of perfection, and let’s embrace the authentic beauty of this stage in your family’s life.
In my personal opinion, the best galleries are the ones with a majority of those candid, un-posed but guided moments. We will always include a few smiling at the camera basic shots, but the majority of my workflow is setting families up in a flattering, natural feeling prompt – and letting their chemistry guide the rest. If done correctly by your photographer, you should rarely feel awkward or like you don’t know what to do next. I will keep you busy!
6. Prepare Ahead but Stay Flexible
Before your session, I’ll send you a guide with tips on what to bring and how to prepare. However, the most important thing is to stay flexible. Life with little ones is unpredictable, and my goal is to make the experience as stress-free and enjoyable as possible.
When you book with Kentucky Heirlooms, I send out a questionnaire to learn as much as I can about your family and therefore best prepare you for your upcoming session. I also have a great session prep guide that gets sent out with your welcome guide that has some great reminders and tips – conveniently ready to tear off and hang on your fridge.
7. Consider Hiring Professional Hair & Makeup Services
Hiring professional hair and makeup for a photoshoot can be a game-changer, especially for mothers of newborns. The early days with a newborn can be overwhelming, and self-care often takes a backseat. A professional artist ensures you look and feel your best without the stress, giving you that extra confidence boost.
They’ll work with your features to create a flattering, long-lasting look that complements your style and the significance of the moment. Plus, having one less thing to worry about lets you fully enjoy the experience of capturing precious memories with your little one. It’s an investment in both the photos and your peace of mind!
In Conclusion
Newborn photography doesn’t have to be stressful. With the right preparation and a seasoned newborn photographer in Louisville, KY by your side, it can be a calm, joyful experience that results in timeless portraits of your growing family.
